Trump Skewers Spain's Economic Performance, NATO Spending
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump opened with a pointed rhetorical challenge: "Has anybody looked at how badly the country of Spain is doing."
He followed with a sweeping condemnation of Spain's fiscal standing, stating: "Their financial numbers, despite contributing almost nothing to NATO and their military defense, are absolutely horrendous."
The remarks reflect weeks of mounting friction between the two allies, fueled primarily by the Trump administration's demand that NATO members raise defense expenditure to 5% of national income — a threshold Madrid has firmly rejected.
Relations deteriorated further as Spain positioned itself among the most vocal opponents of the US-Israel military campaign against Iran, which was launched on Feb. 28. Tehran responded to the joint offensive with retaliatory strikes on Israel and neighboring countries hosting American military assets.
Active hostilities have been suspended since April 8, when Pakistan stepped in to broker a two-week ceasefire. Washington and Tehran subsequently held talks in Pakistan last weekend, with diplomatic efforts now focused on arranging a follow-up round of negotiations in Islamabad.
