US Presses Iran on Nuclear Threat
This declaration comes in spite of recent comments by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who asserted that the agency had discovered no indication that Tehran is working on such a weapon.
Some experts argue that the American stance mirrors earlier attempts used to legitimize regime changes throughout the Middle East.
The prior week saw Israel conducting aerial attacks against Iranian positions, justifying the action by claiming Tehran posed an immediate danger of developing a nuclear device.
In response, Iran – maintaining that its nuclear activities are for civilian objectives – retaliated by targeting Israeli locations.
The Israeli action followed an IAEA report stating that Iran had refined uranium up to 60 percent purity, a level still below the 90 percent threshold needed for weaponization.
Yet since the escalation began, Grossi has reiterated that his agency holds no confirmation that Iran is attempting to construct a nuclear bomb, underscoring that merely enriching uranium does not equate to building a weapon.
American intelligence bodies also report they have not uncovered any signs suggesting Iran is actively pursuing nuclear arms.
Despite these assessments, Leader Donald Trump asserted that Iran was “very close” to obtaining a bomb and cautioned that the United States might take action should Iran refuse to abandon its nuclear endeavors.
