Pakistan’s PM Offers to Mediate Amid Iran-Israel Tensions

(MENAFN) On Friday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a discussion about the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, with Islamabad expressing its willingness to contribute to peace initiatives in the troubled region, according to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s office.

The phone conversation came just two days after Pakistan’s Army Chief, Gen. Asim Munir, held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday. During the call, Sharif highlighted the urgent need to resolve the escalating Middle East crisis, particularly the Iran-Israel dispute, through diplomatic channels and open dialogue.

Sharif described the conflict as a "grave" threat and affirmed Pakistan’s readiness to take a “constructive” part in any peace-building efforts, stressing that the conflict’s consequences were alarming not only for the region but for the global community as well.

In addition to regional concerns, Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to engaging India in talks aimed at resolving key unresolved issues such as Kashmir, the Indus Water Treaty, trade relations, and counter-terrorism measures.

He commended Trump’s “pivotal” contribution in facilitating a ceasefire following last month’s military confrontation between Pakistan and India, an intervention that successfully prevented a "major catastrophe between the two nuclear-armed states."

Sharif also noted that Trump’s “positive” remarks about Pakistan serve as a “most” encouraging sign for lasting peace in South Asia, which he emphasized can only be achieved through sincere and substantive dialogue between the two nations.

Looking ahead, Sharif stressed the importance of Pakistan and the United States collaborating to promote mutually advantageous partnerships across various sectors, including trade, investment, energy, mining, rare earth metals, and information technology.
