Italian deputy Premier describes Le Pen sentence as ‘declaration of war by Brussels’

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has strongly criticized the conviction of French politician Marine Le Pen, calling it “a declaration of war by Brussels.” Le Pen was sentenced to four years in prison on embezzlement charges and banned from holding public office for five years, including the 2027 presidential election.Salvini drew parallels between Le Pen’s case and the recent disqualification of independent Romanian candidate Calin Georgescu, who was barred from running after winning a first-round victory. Salvini accused the ruling elites, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, of undermining democracy by targeting political opponents.Le Pen, convicted of embezzling over €4 million from the European Parliament between 2004 and 2016, has been an outspoken critic of NATO and the EU’s policies, particularly regarding Ukraine and Russia. Despite her legal troubles, recent polls suggest she could secure a significant share of the vote in the 2027 French presidential election.
